June is nearly upon us.
For most of us that means summer, vacations, no school, cookouts, baseball games, and more.
For less than 10% of the population, June is Pride Month.
I bet you just imagined scantily dressed people, draped in rainbow flags and glitter, didn’t you?
Pride is more than this.
Less than 50 years ago, in Greenwich Village in New York, the Stonewall Riots lasted over three days. Tired of harassment and discrimination, the patrons of The Stonewall Inn protested which turned into riots. More than 1,000 people took to the streets of Greenwich Village in what has been said to be history’s first major protest for homosexual rights.
Pride has become a celebration, a safe place, with people that are similar and different from us.
Pride festivals allow people from all over to have opportunities to be themselves while our bodies and our identities are still policed by the government, religious groups, and often, sadly, the people we love.
I am extremely honored to have been invited back to The Dance Pavilion at Milwaukee Pride, 2017, the biggest Pride event in the country.
I will be DJing on Friday, June 9th from 8:30-9:30pm, also known as the Milwaukee Showcase. The production is guaranteed out of this world and you will not be disappointed!
For me, Pride is a chance to celebrate with my friends and family with people from all backgrounds and walks of life. I love that music has the ability to bring us together, so that we can sing, dance, cry, cheer, take clothes off, throw glitter bombs, but most of all smile and feel joy.
Please join me in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this year for Milwaukee Pride 2017 and help me continue to spread the #DareToBe message.
I promise to have a couple of surprises for you all, so stay tuned and locked in on my social media pages:
